Culture Cross

(Ravai/Rounds)

Girl in the middle, neither black nor white
mixed breed, half-caste
never wrong, never right
can cut it in society, can cut it on the street
she’s just like sonny rollins’ saxophone
long, hard and sweet

chorus
culture cross, never at a loss
adaptable, versatile, flexible and volatile
culture cross
culture cross,
never at a loss
just coloured

boy in the middle, sent him off to war
he was mixed breed, half-caste
no perfection, no flaw
met the girl in the middle
oh, he blew her right away
they’ll think of each other with love and lust
forever and a day

chorus

bridge
oh, where would they be
oh, lo, where would she be
without he
without he

chorus

About This Song...

This song was written by request of Pati Umaga (Pacific Nation Records) who offered to record a single for me and wanted something with an “Island” theme.

I wrote about being half-caste, and the song celebrates the diversity of emotion, talent and life for people of two or more cultures - i love what i am and am proud of my white mother (English/Danish pioneers of the Rai Valley, Nelson, Aotearoa) and my coloured father (Tongan/Fijian/Samoan/European).

I am a first generation Australian and am grateful and glad to be allowed to live in this great and mysterious Land of the Dreaming (hello to my friends in Broome!!), Ilove my mother’s country of Aotearoa and have lived some years there in great happiness, but the country of my heart is my father’s, Fiji - o Viti, noqu vanua dina !!
